The eagerly awaited day has finally arrived for the people of the Borders and Midlothian region of Scotland, who have waited over half a century to see the reopening of their railway line. Sunday saw the inaugural journey on the new line, with its official opening taking place tomorrow 9th of September.
Her Majesty the Queen, Prince Philip and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will travel the route in a steam locomotive from Waverley Station (Edinburgh), stopping off at Newtongrange, in Midlothian, and finally stopping at the Scottish Borders town of Tweedbank, where the Queen will reveal a plaque to mark the occasion. This is the longest domestic railway to be built in the UK in over 100 years, and will be marked not only with the Royal journey but also celebrations at either end of the line in the coming days.
If you are currently in the depths of your Scottish Borders footloose walking holiday and would like to catch a glimpse of this historic steam journey the train will pass through these towns (times subject to change):
11.24am Heriot
11.35am Fountainhall
11.56am Stow
12.07pm Galashiels (train will slow down as it passes station)
12.18pm Tweedbank
ATG are delighted with the launch of the new railway: Tweedbank has excellent connections to the start of our Scottish Borders Footloose route in Kelso, and our route ends in Galashiels, from where the new line connects to Waverley Station in Edinburgh in just 50 minutes.
